Preconditioned Mixed Spectral Element Methods for Elasticity and Stokes Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
Preconditioned iterative methods for the indefinite systems obtained by discretizing the linear elasticity and Stokes problems with mixed spectral elements in three dimensions are introduced and analyzed. The resulting stiffness matrices have the structure of saddle point problems with a penalty term, which is associated with the Poisson ratio for elasticity problems or with stabilization techniques for Stokes problems. The main results of this paper show that the convergence rate of the resulting algorithms is independent of the penalty parameter, the number of spectral elements N and mildly depend.ant on the spectral degree n via the inf-sup constant. The preconditioners proposed for the whole indefinite system are block-diagonal and block-triangular. Numerical experiments presented in the final section show that these algorithms are a practical and efficient strategy for the iterative solution of the indefinite problems arising from mixed spectral element discretizations of elliptic systems. *This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant NSF-CCR-9503408 and by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS1-19480 while the author was in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001.

Iterative Substructuring Methods for Spectral Element Discretizations of Elliptic Systems. II: Mixed Methods for Linear Elasticity and Stokes Flow
Iterative substructuring methods are introduced and analyzed for saddle point problems with a penalty term. Two examples of saddle point problems are considered: the mixed formulation of the linear elasticity system and the generalized Stokes system in three dimensions. These problems are discretized with spectral element methods. The resulting stiiness matrices are symmetric and indeenite. The...
متن کاملHybrid and Multiplicative Overlapping Schwarz Algorithms with Standard Coarse Spaces for Mixed Linear Elasticity and Stokes Problems
The goal of this work is to construct and study hybrid and multiplicative two-level overlapping Schwarz algorithms with standard coarse spaces for the almost incompressible linear elasticity and Stokes systems, discretized by mixed finite and spectral element methods with discontinuous pressures. Two different approaches are considered to solve the resulting saddle point systems: a) a precondit...
متن کاملSchwarz Type Solvers for hp-FEM Discretizations of Mixed Problems
The Stokes problem and linear elasticity problems can be viewed as a mixed variational formulation. These formulations are discretized by means of the hp-version of the finite element method. The system of linear algebraic equations is solved by the preconditioned Bramble-Pasciak conjugate gradient method. The development an efficient preconditioner requires three ingredients, a preconditioner ...
متن کاملDomain Decomposition Algorithms for Saddle Point Problems
In this paper, we introduce some domain decomposition methods for saddle point problems with or without a penalty term, such as the Stokes system and the mixed formulation of linear elasticity. We also consider more general nonsymmetric problems, such as the Oseen system, which are no longer saddle point problems but can be studied in the same abstract framework which we adopt. Several approach...
متن کاملA Preconditioning Technique for Indefinite Systems Resulting from Mixed Approximations
This paper provides a preconditioned iterative technique for the solution of saddle point problems. These problems typically arise in the numerical approximation of partial differential equations by Lagrange multiplier techniques and/or mixed methods. The saddle point problem is reformulated as a symmetric positive definite system, which is then solved by conjugate gradient iteration. Applicati...
